Håkonshella is strongly connected with our first Christian King, Håkon the Good. The saga tells us that he was born here, the son of Harald Hårfagre and Tora Mosterstang. And here he died in 961 after receiving his fatal blow in the Battle of Fitjar. A memorial stone was raised at Håkonshella in 1921.
