PARADISE FOR MOSSES

The old road between Trengereid and Takkvam curves through protruding headlands and in toward steep mountains and river gorges. Skuggestranda is a good name for this stretch. For many plants here there is only just enough light and warmth to survive. Many species of moss do just fine, however, since here they are guaranteed protection against drying out. On the mountainside and blocks in the north-facing gorges, the mosses do especially well. They grow in mounds or wide mats, often several species together. One of them, the common scissorleaf moss, is very rare in Norway. The moss is golden brown in colour and not very easy to find. The little filmy fern also thrives in this environment.
