It must have taken a long time for the snails of Finse to make it to the mountains; six species have been found as high as 1470 m a.s.l. For the snail species with an outer shell, it is perhaps not the mountain climate that is the biggest problem. It is probably worse to find a place with enough calcium in the soil to make their shells.

When the lush beach area innermost in Ulvikapollen was protected, the bird life was instrumental to the decision. The plant diversity is just as impressive. In Hordaland sea meadows such as this are rare small in size - they are more common in coastal environments.

It is not easy to know what the conditions are at the nesting grounds when one is far away in winter - perhaps in France or the Mediterranean. At Sandvin the birds who arrive in the country a week too early, have to wait patiently for the snow in the mountains or on the fields to melt.
