Byfjorden

Swimming and fishing is fully possible in Byfjorden (By Fjord). The water is of good quality most places, after considerable resources have been used in past years for clean-up. But, past sins still lie in the mud on the sea bottom. Fish that live in direct contact with the bottom sludge should not be eaten.

Kalandsvatnet and Klokkarvatnet

Nordåsvatnet

The Post-war Era came to Fana with its population growth and modern sanitary equipment. This had nearly catastrophic consequences for Nordåsvatnet as a recreational area. After the runoff water got re-directed to deeper water, and later also to the fjord outside, Lake Nordås won back both its swimming guests and its sports fishermen.

Korsfjorden

Skogseidvatnet

Lake Skogseidvatnet is the most famous fishing lake in Hordaland, with good stocks of both char and trout. There is fishing here throughout the year: with a net in the autumn, through the ice in winter, and with a fishing rod in the summer.

Krækkjavassdraget

Few other animal species on Hardangervidda have been as much the focus of scientific research as the spotted trout. The spotted trout is considered to be a genetic variant of brown trout. It lives in parts of the Krækkjav water system. Otherwise, on a world scale, this species is only found in a small area in Kaukasus, and possibly also in a lake in Rondane.

Granvinsvassdraget

After the ice age, Granvin Fjord reached all the way up under Skjervsfjossen waterfall. Just a thousand years later, as a result of the rising of the land after the ice melted, this whole inner part of the fjord freed itself of the sea and became Granvinsvatnet lake. In spite of this rise in elevation, this waterway is still navigable for fish: Sea trout have wandered into Granvinsvatnet in more recent times and evolved to become freshwater trout. And salmon and sea trout made the journey 13 kilometres up the Storelvi river.

Kollevågen

From 1938 until 1975 there was a large amount of trash dumped in Kollevågen. A lot of the garbage from the city of Bergen ended up here. The dump was up to 20 metres high, and much got dumped under water in the bay. When the dump was closed, the time had come to make good on a municipal promise to make the place into a recreation area. In 1978, nets and earth were laid over the dump, and afterward it was sowed with seeds. This was quite successful, and In 1983, the recreation area was opened.

Fjell river network

There are many river networks out by the coast and they tend to be small and unassuming. The farmer has relied upon the watercourses to run his mill and saw, and it may be that the trout have given him a good source of food in years when the ocean fish failed. In our time, these river networks are being rediscovered for their value in recreation and outdoor life, and several places, tourist trails have been built in order to fully enjoy them.

Glesvær

He wondered, surely, the fisherman who in 1769 found a 3.3 metre-long silvery shining sea creature at Glesvær. Perhaps he hadn't heard the legend about the sea snake. If so, he must have thought that that was what he had found, for the sea creature resembled more a fantasy figure of a sea snake than any fish he had ever seen.
