Kvitingen
Few other places in Hordaland, or even the whole country, get as much rain as in the Samnanger mountains. The mountains here simply attract wetness. The weather station on Kvitingen has continuous measurements all the way back to 1900, and the measurements have documented several records for the county. The station is therefore much used as a reference for the rainfall in western Norway.
Ullensvang vicarage
Well over 200 years ago, the priest Niels Hertzberg started making climate observations at the vicarage at Lofthus in Ullensvang. Hertzberg was active and ahead of his time in many fields, and had a great interest in natural science. Temperature and pressure were measured daily at the vicarage - often several times a day - with homemade instruments. The meteorological measurements started in December of 1797, and were carried out continuously until 1840, the year before he died.
Søfteland
If you drive between Søfteland and Ulven on a clear spring morning, or an evening in late autumn, you are advised to be careful on the turns. The temperature on the road can fall to under 0 °C here long before other places in the municipality. On clear, still nights the earth's surface chills quite a bit. In exposed areas a layer of cold air develops very near the ground and the road surface can easily chill to below freezing.
