Lake Purkebolsvatnet is perhaps western Norway's largest sleeping city - for birds. They come in the thousands, usually in later summer and autumn. The barn swallows alone number 10 000 - 12 000 at their most numerous.

Herdlevær lies on one of the small islands west of Hjeltefjorden, facing the North Sea and the big ocean. Today you may arrive there by car. The numerous islands are linked together by elegant bridge spans made of concrete. Fifty years ago it was half a day’s journey to get to Herdlevær from the mainland by your own rowing boat or ferry.

Between Lake Kvalheimsvatnet and Lake Mykingsvatnet, north of Grindheim, we find one of the biggest continuous lowland bogs in Hordaland. It is 500-600 metres across and a whole 2 kilometres long. Locally, the bog is called "Havet" .

From prehistoric times Bømlo and Moster were the first landing places when arriving from the west; a landscape with good harbours.
