Frekhaug has been a large farm with well-off owners through many generations. The main house, a two storey building with a hipped roof, must have been erected about 1780.

Valldalen or Valdalen, the name that the locals used in past times, had been a permanent settlement for a long time, and later the biggest mountain-farm valley in western Norway. Since that time there have been many changes: Most of the fields are no longer in use. Bjørkeskogen, a birch forest that had grown in the valley for thousands of years, took more and more over. And in the valley bottom, the Valldals dam now keeps the artificially large Valldalsvatnet Lake in place.

Låtefossen waterfall, or more correctly, waterfalls, plunge 165 metres down the mountainside, 51 of them in free fall - to the enchantment of the many tourists along the highway below. The spectacular view is mainly seen from the stage of the Storelvi river in the valley below the waterfall.

It is not easy to know what the conditions are at the nesting grounds when one is far away in winter - perhaps in France or the Mediterranean. At Sandvin the birds who arrive in the country a week too early, have to wait patiently for the snow in the mountains or on the fields to melt.
