INDRE VIKANE – A TRACE OF THE MIDDLE AGES IN THE LANDSCAPE

The farm built in a terrace in Indre Vikane gives us an impression of how many single-unit farms may have looked in the Middle Ages. Many clustered farms may have developed from a single row of houses in the 1500s. In this row at Vikane the timbered dwelling house lies in the middle of the structure, with a store at one gable and a scullery at the other, under the same roof. In addition, there is the storehouse on pillars (stabbur), and thereupon the “sleeping house” with a loft. On other farms we may see that the sleeping quarters have been joined with the dwelling house and the scullery.
