Årbakka - The trading center

The trading centre at Årbakka lies in a sheltered spot facing the Onarheim fjord, well preserved and maintained, a classical west Norwegian trading centre. Årbakka belongs to the newer trading centres that grew up around 1842, when the trade monopoly of the town inhabitants in the districts was revoked. The trading commenced here in 1898, and the store is as it was in 1960, when the trading business was moved up to the highway. Store, smithy and a boathouse still stand here today, the characteristic winching loft tells us which buildings were used for storage and trading.
