The Hardanger Maritime Museum ("Hardanger fartøysenter" or HFS) in Norheimsund is a centre for maritime culture presented in an international context. The centre is involved with restoration of historic vessels, the museum, continuing education about old shipbuilding skills and traditions, vocational training, child welfare work, maritime camps and tourism. HFS is one of three national Maritime preservation centres recognized by the Directorate of Cultural Heritage (1996). The centre has its origins in the restoration of the Hardanger sailing vessel Mathilde, which is in active operation and uses HFS as its base. It is open to visitors.
