The rock painting “running dog”

The rock painting “running dog” (Egil Korsnes)

If we follow the old post road 100m down from the farmyard at Gjøstein, we arrive at an enormous rock face called Ringsteinen. A short distance further north the road passes between two stones, Porten (the gate). Some metres further on there is still another stone, Klipe. On all of these three stones there are rock paintings, ring figures and a band with a coiled ornamentation – “running dog”, as it has been called (see picture). The age of these paintings is uncertain, they may go as far back as to the Bronze Age.
